M y heart beat faster as I thought about speaking to the throng of hybrids outside our warm pool of water. I didn’t want to start a war; it seemed to me that we were fulfilling the king’s fears. That was not my intention; unfortunately, it seemed it was the only recourse. I could hear Learden’s beating heart under my ear as his hands moved up my sides and under my arms. He pulled me up to his waiting lips, wrapping his arms around me, pulling me tighter against him. I wanted to stay in his arms forever, knowing we would once again put ourselves in danger.
He broke the embrace reluctantly. “We must dress, and you need to rest before you talk to the hybrids.” His familiar smile appeared when our eyes met. “And no excuses this time.”
I sighed. “All right, if you insist. Will you stay with me until I fall asleep?”
“Of course,” he said as he put his arms around me. Without warning, his hand went behind my knees, and he jumped up out of the pool with me cradled in his arms.
A nervous giggle escaped as I grabbed him around the neck. “Warn me next time,” I said, a little breathless.
He laughed, “What would be the fun of that?” He set me carefully on my feet.
I turned my old dress inside out and dried off with it before I put on my fresh clothes. It felt good to be clean again and more modestly covered. The boots were a bit big for me, so I ripped a little cloth from the soiled dress to put into the toe, making them a little more comfortable. As I stood up I felt Learden staring at me. It was amazing to me how dangerously handsome he was with his long dark hair and slim muscular physique. I could feel the passion rising in me as his gaze raked over my body.
“What?” I asked smiling.
“It will be hard to lie next to you looking like that. The color of the dress suits you against your dark hair.” He held out his hand to me.
My hair was still dripping a little, so I left it down and took his outstretched hand. “I need to find something better than this ruined dress to dry my hair. Maybe there will be some drying powder in the chest of treasures that Kolis brought me.” I gave my hair one more squeeze and then threw it behind me. I will need to cut it soon before it hits the floor, I thought. It’s already to my knees.
“It is beautiful as it is,” he said as he looked down at me with an impish grin on his face.
I punched him in the arm. “You need to stop listening to my thoughts without my permission.” I laughed. It really didn’t matter; he could already read me without my thoughts, and I him. We were truly mated. Another face slipped into my mind. Kianas. My choice was hurting him; and he didn’t deserve to be hurt.
